Massive overnight fire destroys majority of The Mountain at Canton First Monday Trade Days

CANTON, Texas — More than a dozen fire departments responded to “The Mountain” area of Canton First Monday Trade Days for a massive fire overnight.

CANTON, Texas — More than a dozen fire departments responded to “The Mountain” area of Canton First Monday Trade Days for a massive fire overnight.

The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at “The Mountain” which is located near the intersection of State Highway 64 and Farm-to-Market (FM) 17 — just east of downtown Canton. Although its unknown exactly how many buildings have been destroyed in the fire, the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal’s Office stated approximately 90 percent of The Mountain was a loss or suffered damages.

As of 4 a.m., the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal’s Office stated the fire had been contained and firefighters would likely remain on scene for a couple of days while investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.

No injuries were initially reported in the fire.

“The Mountain has suffered a great loss of buildings, but everyone is safe and for that we are thankful.,” stated The Mountain’s Facebook Page.

Responding to the fire from Kaufman County were firefighters from Kemp, Kaufman, Mabank, Elmo, and College Mound. Other departments responded from Canton, South Van Zandt, Grand Saline, Van, Wills Point, Whitton, Edgewood, Ben Wheeler, Lindale, Mineola, and Brownsboro. Champion EMS and Red Cross provided rehab.

In November 2013, a large fire also destroyed portions of The Mountain area.
