FORNEY, Texas — The North Forney High School (1-3, 2-5) vs. West Mesquite High School (1-3, 3-4) varsity football game is set to resume Saturday at 10 a.m. following four game delays due to weather.
The game began with the kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and Forney Independent School District’s (ISD) City Bank Stadium losing power due to heavy rains and inclement weather. The power outage continued for approximately an hour as the rain continued. Once the power restored, the game resumed only to be stopped again due to a second power outage which lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Once the power restored and the stadium’s lights warmed back up, as well as the players, a lightning delay halted the game for another 30 minutes.
Players took the field again at 10:55 p.m., just five minutes before the UIL cutoff time for game restarts, with 51 seconds remaining in the second quarter. West Mesquite was leading North Forney 37-0.
The game rolled through halftime with a brief stoppage, kickoff, and no half-time show.
With 7:19 remaining on the clock and the score unchanged, the game was delayed for a final time at 11:13 p.m. — nearly four hours after kickoff. Coaches decided to continue the game on Saturday, October 23, 2015, at 10 a.m. at City Bank Stadium.
Forney ISD Athletic Director Neal Weaver said, in the years he has been involved in sports, he has seen lightning delays and one power outage several years ago but nothing like tonight which saw over two hours of stoppage and a rescheduled game.
During the first power outage, approximately seven people were stuck in the stadium’s elevator for approximately 40 minutes while firefighters worked to open the elevator doors on the ground level.
