FORNEY, Texas — It was a cold, rainy, and muddy Tuesday morning. But, that didn’t stop the Kaufman County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office from building a wheelchair platform for a family with children with special needs and delivering a Christmas they won’t soon forget.
FORNEY, Texas — It was a cold, rainy, and muddy Tuesday morning. But, that didn’t stop the Kaufman County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office from building a wheelchair platform for a family with children with special needs and delivering a Christmas they won’t soon forget.
Venacia Martin couldn’t stop thanking Constable Jason Johnson and his team for the gifts around her family’s Christmas tree, a new washer machine in their laundry room, and a rocking chair and wheelchair platform for her son who is wheel-chair bound.
The Martins have four children who attend Forney Independent School District campuses — Crosby Elementary and Brown Middle School. Angel, 13, recently had surgery to remove a tennis-ball size tumor located near his brain. He is partially paralyzed on the right side of his body. His younger brother, Jonathan, is wheel-chair bound.
Constable Johnson, who is in his first year serving Precinct 2, launched the Santa COP program to assist local families in need. The Martin family is the second family to be nominated this year and the Constable’s Office was able to help the family with the assistance from community and business donations, said Johnson.
The officers delivered two large sacks full of gifts for the Martin family’s four children. The gifts were donated by local families and the Forney Lions Club.
Today, the officers also delivered a new washing machine to the family after their old machine quit working — forcing several trips a week to the laundromat. Lowes of Forney offered a significant discount for the washing machine, according to Johnson, who said it was purchased using funds donated by the community and from Dickey’s Barbecue Boots and Badges foundation.
Lowes of Forney also donated all the lumber and supplies needed to build the wheelchair platform.
“We’re very, very grateful for the community support and assistance,” said Martin. “We won’t forget this Christmas.”
In addition to the praise for the constable’s office, Martin thanked her local support network and the staff at Crosby Elementary who recently raised funds and gifts for her family.
“Thank you for everything,” Angel said as he sat on the couch with his brothers and sister.
“It’s the smiles that pay us,” said Deputy Guadalupe Frias who, along with Deputy Steve Hoops, Deputy John Bohmer, and Chief Clerk Amber Dennis, assist in the Santa COP program.
