KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas – Kaufman County Assistant Fire Marshal Randy Richards has been promoted to the position of fire marshal after an unanimous vote by the Kaufman County Commissioners' Court on Monday morning.
Richards has served as the county's assistant fire marshal since 2006. He replaces retiring Fire Marshal Larry Ewing who served as the county's fire marshal since 2002. Ewing is expected to retire in December after using his extended leave and vacation days.
Public Works Director Kathy Morris, a 25-year Kaufman County employee, also recently announced her retirement. Richards will also serve as the director of the Public Works and the Environmental Departments.
“I appreciate the support and confidence the court has in me,” Richards stated Monday morning.
The Environmental Department currently consists of two officers in the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department. Richards will oversee that department and the two officers. “It's a good fit,” said Richards because currently the fire marshal's office and the environmental department work alongside each other.
The three departments will be consolidated "in an effort to provide for a more efficient operation," according to a Kaufman County statement.
