FORNEY, Texas — No students were significantly injured when a school bus and an SUV collided on Farm-to-Market (FM) 548 on Friday morning. The driver of the SUV however, was airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital.
The wreck occurred just after 7:30 a.m. on FM 548 at its intersection with Reeder Lane. The school bus, traveling northbound, struck the SUV on the driver's side of the vehicle.
"Preliminary investigation reveals the driver of the minivan failed to yield the right of way to the school bus and pulled out in front of the bus," Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lonny Haschel told inForney.com in an email.
The driver of the SUV, a Forney woman, was extricated from the vehicle and later airlifted by a CareFlite medical helicopter to a Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, with serious injuries.
Four students were being evaluated for precautionary reasons at the scene, according to Forney Independent School District spokesperson Larry Coker. Three of the students were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation with non-life threatening injuries, according to Haschel. The bus was carrying between 30 and 35 students at the time of the crash.
The remaining students have been transferred to another bus to be transported to their respective school campuses.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
This is a developing story.
