TERRELL—The Terrell State Hospital has been essential to the community since its opening in 1885. The Texas Legislature authorized funds for a new facility, and groundbreaking is set to commence this summer.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Texas Legislature, Terrell will receive a new 250-bed replacement hospital, with construction slated to commence this year. The 88th Texas Legislature has allocated $573 million for this crucial project.

According to a release by Texas Health and Human Services, the updated facility will feature “state-of-the-art therapeutic spaces in a secure environment for patients experiencing mental illness” and separate spaces for adults and those under 18 years of age.

The new facility will be equipped with robust security measures, including a perimeter fence, video surveillance, alarms, and other electronic systems, as well as an increased staff presence.

The facility will also feature 250 beds, 50 of which are maximum security, 140 are forensic non-maximum security, 35 are adolescent, and 25 are civil.

While plans for the new facility are being finalized, groundbreaking is expected later this summer, and the grand opening is slated for fall 2027.
