KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Rangers have taken lead on an off-duty Forney Police Department officer-involved shooting on Sunday night which sent one man to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. The officer, who was uninjured, has since been place on administrative leave.
The incident took place Sunday at approximately 9 p.m. on Farm-to-Market (FM) 741 at its intersection with FM 2932.
”We were informed that Officer C. Prewitt of the Forney Police Department, who was off duty and in plain clothes, stopped to render aid at what he thought was a motorist assist,” stated Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Fred Klingelberger in a Monday afternoon press release.
”Once Prewitt was out of his vehicle, he witnessed a domestic dispute in progress between Cody Wesberry, 24, of Forney, and 2 other family members,” stated Klingelberger. “Prewitt identified himself as an off-duty officer and then returned to his vehicle to call 911.”
”Then Wesberry approached Prewitt’s vehicle in an aggressive manner and attempted to gain entry into the vehicle,” Klingelberger continued. “Prewitt, who also had his family in the car with him, opened fire striking Wesberry 3 times.”
On Monday morning, Klingelberger had stated Weberry had approached Prewitt’s vehicle and began banging on the window, “attempting to break the window and open the door,.”
Wesberry was flown by CareFlite medical helicopter to Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he is in stable condition, according to police.
After the shooting, Prewitt left the scene and parked down the street until on-duty officers arrived, according to Klingelberger.
Benny Wesberry, a man who identified himself as the victim’s father to NBC DFW, says he was attempting to calm his son who had been drinking and was agitated. Wesberry tells NBC DFW he had control of his son and had pulled him away from the officer’s vehicle before the shooting.
On Sunday night, police cordoned off the intersection of FM 741 and FM 2932 with crime scene tape and focused their investigation around two vehicles — which were both off road. FM 741 from Interstate 20 to Precinct Road was closed for several hours while police were investigating the shooting.
On Monday morning, Klingelberger says, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office requested the Texas Rangers take the lead in the investigation because Prewitt was formerly an officer with the sheriff’s department.
Pending the results of the investigation, Prewitt has been placed on administrative leave as per department policy, according to officials.
This is a developing story.
