ELMO, Texas — An unoccupied pickup truck was struck by a westbound Union Pacific train in Elmo Wednesday night and a man was later arrested and charged with obstructing a highway passageway.
ELMO, Texas — An unoccupied pickup truck was struck by a westbound Union Pacific train in Elmo Wednesday night and a man was later arrested and charged with obstructing a highway passageway.
The truck was struck near the County Road 352 railroad crossing at U.S. Highway 80 but was not at an official crossing site, according to emergency personnel. Witnesses reported seeing a man flee the truck prior to it being struck.
Approximately an hour after the accident, a man matching the description witnesses reported was seen walking near the accident scene at a nearby gas station. He, 57-year-old Johnny Pecanty, was subsequently arrested and charged by the Union Pacific Railroad police with obstructing a highway passageway.
Pecanty was uninjured in the accident and no injuries were reported from anyone on the train at the time of the accident.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015. The train cleared the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m. Railroad police and Union Pacific personnel were on scene inspecting the tracks.
The Elmo Volunteer Fire Department and Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the accident.
