SEAGOVILLE, Texas – Two at-large dogs were shot and killed Monday night after attacking another dog being walked by a woman and her baby in Seagoville.
Seagoville police say the incident happened at approximately 10:42 p.m. Monday on Mary Jane Lane. The woman was carrying her baby and walking her dog, a black Labrador retriever, when two at-large pit bulls began attacking her dog.
A neighbor, driving by at the time of the incident, attempted to separate the dogs. “The attack on the pedestrian's dog continued, and the passerby was forced to fire two gunshots at the dogs,” stated Seagoville Police Department Sergeant Steve Davis.
After being shot, both dogs retreated to their home, also on Mary Jane Lane, where they died.
The woman's dog was taken to a local veterinarian clinic where it underwent emergency surgery for a large laceration on its neck. Multiple abrasions were also reported in the veterinarian's report.
No criminal charges will be filed against the owner of the pit bulls or the neighbor who shot the dogs, according to police. The pit bulls weren't previously known to attack other animals. The neighbor who shot the dogs is protected under the Texas Health and Safety Code Section 822.013 which states the use of deadly force was allowable in this instance.
No injuries to people were reported. “It's just a very unfortunate situation,” said Davis.
