CRANDALL, Texas — Two people were killed after a wrong-way driver on U.S. Highway 175 struck another vehicle head on.
Police began receiving 911 calls just before 11:30 p.m. for a driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of U.S. Highway 175 near Kaufman.
Several drivers were run off the highway before the wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle in Crandall — entrapping both drivers and causing the vehicles to catch on fire.
Crandall Police Department Sergeant Crawford said both drivers were killed in the crash and have been sent to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office for positive identification.
Family and friends identified the victim as a 21-year-old Juan Coreas of Kaufman, Texas. A friend was traveling in front of the victim's vehicle and had swerved to avoid impact with the wrong-way driver just prior to the collision.
Authorities are investigating whether or not alcohol or other drugs played a factor in the crash.
Eastbound and westbound U.S. Highway 175 were closed in between Farm-to-Market (FM) 148 and Bud Stoy Road. Westbound was reopened at approximately 12:30 a.m. and eastbound was reopened at 3:05 a.m..
The Crandall Fire Department, Kaufman Fire Department, and Seagoville Fire Department responded to the crash along with the Crandall Police Department, Kaufman Police Department, and Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.
The Crandall Police Department is investigating the crash with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
