DALLAS COUNTY, Texas — A vehicle landed on westbound U.S. Highway 80 after launching over the eastbound lanes from Lawson Road late Sunday night.
Just before 11 p.m., the Sunnyvale Fire Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash on westbound U.S. Highway 80 just past the Dallas-Kaufman County line near Lawson Road.
According to police, a man driving a new Hyundai Sonata, still bearing dealer paper plates, drove through the Lawson Road stop sign at the south frontage road and struck an embankment in between the eastbound shoulder and the frontage road which launched him over both eastbound lanes.
The vehicle then struck an embankment in the median of the highway which propelled the vehicle airborne again where it struck the concrete center median, overturned, and came to a rest on its roof in the westbound lanes.
The vehicle also briefly caught on fire and was extinguished by another driver. After being extricated, the man was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, in what police described as serious condition.
Westbound U.S. Highway 80 was closed until approximately midnight when the shoulder was opened for traffic. The left lane of eastbound U.S. Highway 80 was closed to allow a wrecker to make repairs to the center median.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
