KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Interstate 20 in Kaufman County is closed due in two different areas due to multiple rollover accidents Saturday morning.
The Elmo Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a rollover accident on westbound I-20 at approximately 4:45 a.m. near mile marker 512 — approximately one mile west of the Kaufman-Van Zandt County line. A truck had overturned and came to a rest in the median.
While working the accident with the overturned truck, an ambulance overturned into the right shoulder. Emergency officials were then forced to close both westbound lanes of I-20. As of 7:06 a.m., the left lane was reopened and the right lane remained closed. A heavy-duty wrecker arrived to tow the ambulance.
The ambulance was out-of-service and was in the process of being delivered to an agency in Houston, Texas.
The Texas Department of Transportation was dispatched to the scene to sand a bridge just prior to the location of the rollover accidents.
A third rollover accident occurred on westbound I-20 near mile marker 501 and also resulted in a highway closure. A vehicle struck the inside guardrail, overturned over the guardrail, and came to a rest on its side at the edge of the bridge.
A heavy-duty wrecker was requested to winch the vehicle back onto the highway. The Terrell Police Department worked this accident.
Injuries were reported in two of the accidents but the patients either refused ambulance transport or took a personal vehicle to a nearby hospital.
