FORNEY, Texas — Forney High School was among 242 teams from 28 states to converge on the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas for the 2019 National Cheerleader Associations High School National Championships over the weekend.
They were also one of a few to walk away with a national title — the win even sweeter for the team who will be saying goodbye to their coach of nearly a decade, Gayla Gonzalez.
Forney High School would go on to improve five points from prelims — scoring 91.80 in Round 1 and 96.17 in Round 2 — for a cumulative score of 95.0750 to claim the national title in the NCA's newest division, the NCA Spirit Program Division. The win is also the campuses first-ever national title.
The NCA's Spirit Program Division incorporates, not only the traditional sideline cheer and dance teams, but also members of the marching band, pep band, drum line, school mascot, and other spirit groups and clubs, emulating a complete game-day experience.
