FORNEY, Texas — Joseph "UglyMan Joe" Holmes, of Forney, is three days away from his shot at a mixed martial arts (MMA) welterweight title at Rite of Passage 4 in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Holmes, 5-0 in his amateur career and ranked No. 3 in the Southwest Divsion and No. 1 in Texas, is set to take on Josh Thompson, 11-5, for the welterweight belt.
Holmes was originally scheduled for a title match against belt holder Kyle Marks before he vacated the title.
"I've been training extremely hard with my teammates at SFS MMA (Salangsang Fighting Systems MMA) day in and day out," Holmes told inForney.com.
Like anything, Holmes says it takes hard work and dedication to become a champion in your sport.
Transitioning from football, Holmes has been training for more than three years, achieved a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsue (BJJ) in March, and has accumulated more than 15 gold metals at BJJ tournaments.
Rite of Passage 4 is scheduled for Friday, July 27, 2018, at 7 p.m. at Horseshoe Casino & Hotel in Bossier City, Louisiana.
