FORNEY, Texas β€” The Forney High School softball team clinched a Game 2 win in their 5A UIL Regional Semifinals best-of-three series against Lake Ridge on Friday night.

The win forces a Game 3 to decide who will advance to the Regional Finals.

The Forney High School Jackrabbits, ranked No. 1 in the state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, recently suffered the loss of a teammate, Emily Galiano, in a tragic accident earlier this week. The team is persevering through the heartbreak, dedicating their season and playoff run to Galiano.

Area softball fans, some traveling several hours, gathered in Rockwall Firday night to show their support for Forney softball.

The team dropped Game 1 to Lake Ridge last night, 1-0, but came out bats hot on Friday night and took Game 2 with an eventual 9-3 score β€” forcing the series tie and a Game 3.

An early Jackrabbit 4-1 scoring gap was solidified in the 4th inning with an additional three runs batted in for a 7-1 lead. Lake Ridge, tied for 10th in the state, scored an additional two runs in the 5th inning, but were unable to overcome the gap. The Jackrabbits put an additional run on the board for a final score of 9-3.

Both teams return to Rockwall tomorrow at 11 a.m. for Game 3.

The winner of this Regional Semifinals series will advance to the Regional Finals against the winner of a best-of-three game series between Mansfield Legacy and The Colony.

Forney ISD has established a memorial and scholarship fund in Emily Galiano's name. Donations may be made at the Forney ISD District Athletic Office at 600 S. Bois D’Arc in Forney, arrangements made by emailing lisa.cowgill@edu.forneyisd.net, or by depositing at American National Bank in Forney, Texas, by mentioning Emily's name.
