ATHENS, Texas — A six-month-old girl died on Thursday after being left in a vehicle all day, according to Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse.
The father, identified as 24-year-old Jackson Tetrick of Brownsboro, was arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide.
According to investigators, Tetrick took his wife to work and dropped off another child at school on Thursday morning. Tetrick then returned home and forgot the infant in the vehicle.
At approximately 9:20 a.m., Tetrick then left for work in Athens, Texas. Then, around 3:30 p.m., Tetrick went to Brownsboro Elementary School on State Highway 31 to pick up the older child and remembered the infant was left inside the vehicle.
School staff attempted to perform emergency CPR on the infant but she was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:40 p.m. The infant's body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy.
The infant was supposed to be dropped off at a babysitter's house earlier in the morning, according to investigators.
"Since 1998, an average of 36 children die of vehicular heatstroke each year across the Country. The highest number of deaths was 49 in 2010 and lowest was 24 in 2015," stated a release from the sheriff's office. "Studies show that a child can die in as few as 15 minutes after being left in an unattended, hot vehicle."
