KAUFMAN, Texas — Nemo, a Kaufman County Precinct 4 Constable's Office K9 who made headlines earlier this week for stopping a suspect in a high-speed chase, alerted to suspected methamphetamine during a late-night traffic stop which resulted in the arrest of a felon in possession of a firearm and drug-related charges.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2018, a Kaufman Police Department officer stopped 45-year-old Zannon James Sherman for a traffic violation on U.S. Highway 175.

"After a short investigation, officers requested a K9 come to the scene," Kaufman Police Department Captain Ed Black told inForney.com on Saturday in response to information on the arrest.

"Deputy Constable Cousins from the Precinct 4 Constables Office and his K9 'Nemo' responded to the scene," stated Black. "Upon arrival, K9 Nemo performed an open air search on the vehicle and alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics."

Officers discovered two baggies containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine, scales, and baggies used to package drugs for distribution, according to Black.

A firearm was also discovered inside the vehicle.

James was arrested and, during a search incident arrest, police officers also discovered two baggies of suspected methamphetamine weighed at 14 grams.

James was booked into the Kaufman County Jail on a charge for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 greater than or equal to four grams and less than 200 grams with a $100,000 bond and unlawful possession of a firearm by felon on a $25,000 bond.

"We want to thank Deputy Constable Cousins and the Constables Office for assisting on this case," stated Black.
