KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A Kaufman County man has been sentenced to serve 45 consecutive years in two family violence cases.
The latest conviction, before Kaufman County Court at Law Judge Tracy Gray on May 6, 2019, comes just over a year after 44-year-old James William Davis was sentenced before 422nd District Court Judge B. Michael Chitty in February 2018.
According to court records, Davis was sentenced in February 2018 by Chitty to 25 years and 20 years for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assaulting a family or household member by impeding breathing or circulation, respectively. Those sentences were ordered to be served concurrently.
A Kaufman County grand jury indicted Davis in the weeks following his conviction in Chitty's court with continuous violence against the family on evidence of a second victim and a pattern of family violence. A jury agreed with those findings during trial and convicted him of the charge.
Gray, during the punishment phase, sentenced Davis to 20 years and ordered the sentence be served consecutive — bringing Davis' total sentencing in the Texas Department of Corrections to 45 years.
Davis had previously been convicted of engaging in organized criminal activity and burglary of a habitation in Rains County. He remains jailed at the Kaufman County pending transfer to the Texas Department of Corrections.
