Cortez was charged with assault causes bodily injury to a family member and assault causes bodily injury. He is being held at the Kaufman County Jail on bonds totaling $17,500.
Cortez's criminal history includes previous charges for family violence and assault, burglary of a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, and theft.
UPDATE [Sept. 8, 4:55 p.m.] — The alleged suspect in an assault case Tuesday has been located and arrested.
Just before 5 p.m., the man was spotted in the area of Farm-to-Market (FM) 460 and FM 740. He was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Forney Municipal Jail.
The suspect's name has not been released pending arraignment.
"Although we were searching for this suspect who was at-large, there were no indications that anyone from the public was in danger," read a statement, in part, from the Forney Police Department. "If we are searching for a subject/subjects we believe to be violent and/or present a danger to the community, we will make notifications to the public as appropriate."
"We are grateful for the support and assistance we often receive from other law enforcement agencies in order to accomplish our Mission," continued the statement. "We routinely work together on a variety of calls for service that may trigger the presence of multiple agencies and/or air support (e.g. crimes with suspects at large, critical missing persons/children, significant traffic problems, etc.). Rest assured there was no danger to the public today."
UPDATE [Sept. 8, 2:15 p.m.] — Assault charges will be filed at-large for a man who was the subject of a Tuesday afternoon search in the Forney area.
A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, which was assisting in the search, was grounded due to weather.
After a nearly two-hour search, the Forney Police Department discontinued its search efforts. The alleged suspect has been identified and charges will be filed at-large.
ORIGINAL — Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for an alleged assault suspect in Forney.
Around 12:40 p.m., the Forney Police Department received a 911 call of an assault in the 600 block of Summerhaven where one person was reported to have been "hurt badly."
The alleged suspect, described as an Hispanic male in his 30s, was last seen wearing a grey shirt, blue Dickie's pants, black shoes, and a gold belt buckle. He was reportedly armed with a large knife.
Police from multiple agencies, including the Forney Police Department, Precinct 2 Constable's Office, and the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, have established a perimeter around the surrounding neighborhood and along U.S. Highway 80.
As of press, the man was wanted on two counts of class A assault.
A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter is aiding in the search.
Police are also investigating a possible sighting of the suspect in the hotel area near Pinson Road and U.S. Highway 80.
