Terrell man sentenced to life in prison for deadly shooting, courtroom cleared due to outbursts

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A Terrell, Texas, man was sentenced to life in prison earlier today after being found guilty of murder in the August 2015 shooting death of a Cedar Hill, Texas, man.

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A Terrell, Texas, man was sentenced to life in prison earlier today after being found guilty of murder in the August 2015 shooting death of a Cedar Hill, Texas, man.

Outbursts by several members of the defendant’s family resulted in the courtroom being cleared during the victim impact statement portion of the trial.

Kaufman County 86th District Court Judge Casey Blair tells inForney.com additional security was requested in anticipation of the verdict and sentencing.

Trial began Monday, September 12, 2016, for Hubert Vaughn Thomas of Terrell, Texas, who was indicted for murder in the shooting death of 42-year-old Raymond Clyde Lampkin of Cedar Hill, Texas, at the Brownstone Apartment Homes complex in the 1300 block of South Adelaide Street in Terrell, Texas, on the night of August 24, 2015.

Video surveillance captured Thomas firing several shots through the windshield of Lampkin’s vehicle which was parked at the Brownstone complex — nine of those shots struck Lampkin.

Yesterday, September 14, 2016, the jury found Thomas guilty of murder.

The sentencing phase began late yesterday following the verdict and continued this morning. Jurors deliberated for less than an hour before sentencing Thomas to life in prison.

During the victim impact statement portion, family members argued over Thomas’ wife’s role in the killing. The wife, who has not been charged, was appointed an attorney prior to her own testimony during the trial.

The argument escalated to pushing and shoving and the courtroom was cleared by courtroom security which was further assisted by the Kaufman Police Department and the Constable’s Office as the individuals were escorted outside of the courthouse.

Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Fred Klingelberger says no injuries or arrests were reported as a result of the confrontation.
