FORNEY, Texas (Forney Independent School District, Larry Coker) — Late Friday, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) commissioner of education, Mike Morath, released a statement removing the testing requirements for 5th and 8th grade students due to the issues with the state’s testing vendor.
This summer, students will not be required to pass the 5th and 8th grade STAAR test as a promotion requirement.
The state also issued the following statement:
"Even though state requirements have been waived, districts are still encouraged to use local discretion to determine on an individual basis whether accelerated instruction should be offered to support students. Districts will not be required to convene Grade Placement Committees but are encouraged to use all relevant and available academic information to make promotion decisions."
Forney ISD supports the recommendation of the state to remove the testing requirements. In order to prepare our students for a successful upcoming academic school year, students will continue with the recommended summer acceleration planned for June 13 - June 20 as scheduled.
Teachers will instruct students in targeted individual academic acceleration during their instructional time together.
