FORNEY, Texas β Forney High School Health Science Technology students partnered with the American Red Cross to run a blood drive on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Forney High School.
In total, the drive brought in over 100 units of blood β βa success,β according to Forney High School senior Kelsey Welborn, who was instrumental in organizing the blood drive.
Forney High School and North Forney High School run several blood drives a year which are open to students and also walk-ins. Health Science Technology and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club members organize the drives and volunteer their time running them.
The students prepared for weeks and coordinated with the American Red Cross to sign up donors prior to the blood drive. Students are also eligible to receive a Red Cross βRed Cordβ and pin to wear during their graduation ceremonies for donating blood three times, volunteering, and enlisting additional donors.
Forney High School senior Rachel Kucera, who is donating for her second time, said she is donating blood to help people. Kucera is working towards obtaining the Red Cord prior to her graduation.
βIt's about saving lives,β said Forney High School senior and Health Science Technology student Bailey Payton who was donating for the first time.
Forney High School will receive $2,500 in scholarship funding for their blood drive efforts to disperse to Health Science Technology and HOSA students, according to Health Science Technology teacher Jason Thompson.
Forney High School and the American Red Cross have tentatively scheduled another blood drive in August of 2014. You do not have to be a student to participate in the blood drives.
