FORNEY—Forney ISD has responded to the fights that occurred last Thursday and is urging legislators to add more resources for districts and school-based law enforcement when events take place.
“We had multiple students involved in altercations on campus yesterday [last Thursday], and our administrators and Forney ISD Police Department are still conducting a full investigation,” stated a release to parents.
“Due to the incidents involving minors and FERPA laws, we are only allowed to notify parents of students involved in isolated incidents. However, we want to remind everyone we will be prosecuting students to the fullest extent of the law as well as administratively per the student code of conduct.”
Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code regulates what school districts and school district-based law enforcement can do regarding punishment for offenses on school property. In their statement, Forney ISD encouraged legislators to consider changing the law to allow districts more resources and measures to handle offenses on campuses.
Forney ISD currently has a ten-page Comprehensive Safety and Wellness document that outlines the district's plan for safety and wellness. The Forney ISD Board of Trustees will receive its annual update on the document Monday evening at the regularly scheduled Board Meeting.
The students responsible for the altercations were immediately removed from the campus.
In closing, Forney ISD thanked law enforcement, teachers, and administrators for their help.
“We are thankful for our teachers, police, and administrators who work tirelessly to provide a safe environment for our students.”
