KAUFMAN, Texas — A possible case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, has been reported at Kaufman High School, according to district officials.
The Kaufman Independent School District (ISD) issued a health alert on Wednesday afternoon warning of a possible case of whooping cough, which is highly contagious infectious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable coughing.
"Custodial staff are disinfecting the affected areas of the high school and sharing information with parents about the illness and recommendations to control its spread," read a statement from the district.
"Pertussis can be a very serious disease, particularly for infants less than one year of age. It is easily spread by droplets in the air that form when an infected person talks, sneezes, or coughs. At first, it may be mistaken for a cold but slowly gets worse after 1-2 weeks with increased coughing spells.
If you suspect that your child may have pertussis, make an appointment with your child’s doctor as soon as possible and exclude your child from school until five days of antibiotic therapy has been completed."
