COLLEGE MOUND, Texas — The Blackjack Baptist Church was damaged in a fire on Sunday morning.
At approximately 8:22 a.m., a passerby spotted smoke coming from the church, located at County Road 124 and Farm-to-Market (FM) 429, and called 911.
The College Mound Fire Department, along with mutual aid from the Elmo Fire Department, responded to the fire — arriving to heavy smoke showing from a metal building that was being used as a sanctuary.
"Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack finding the fire was behind a stage and not easily accessible from the interior," read a statement from the College Mound Fire Department. "Additional firefighters used saws to breach the exterior wall to reach the seat of the fire. Between an aggressive interior and exterior attack the fire was quickly knocked down."
Firefighters were able to salvage a large amount of church audio equipment and memorabilia and move it to a safe area, according to the department, and, although the fire damage was moderate, it appears the building and much of its contents are salvageable.
A firefighter, who had responded to a number of emergency calls over the last 24 hours due to storm damage and a vehicle crash, suffered possible dehydration and was treated at the scene.
The Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
