KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A fire on a central Kaufman County bridge has forced its closure while emergency repairs are underway on Thursday.

Kaufman County Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Hunt says crews are currently working to repair several boards which were damage in a fire earlier this morning. Just before 3 p.m., Hunt said the repairs had been completed and the bridge was reopened.

Thursday morning, the Kaufman Fire Department and Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the bridge on County Road 279, near County Road 301 in the Post Oak Bend area, on a report there was a fire which burned a hole in the center of the bridge.

County Road 279 connects Farm-to-Market (FM) 987 in Post Oak Bend to State Highway (SH) 34 just south of Terrell in the Oak Ridge area.

Kaufman County Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Woosley says the fire burned an approximate three-foot by four-foot hole in the center of the bridge. The fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire.

The bridge is mainly of wood construction with i-beam supports underneath and wooden posts, according to Woosley.
