Key Responsibilities
Under general supervision, Detention Officers will be responsible for maintaining the safety and orderly operation of the jail and its inmates. The following is a representative summary of primary duties associated with this position:
- Monitor activities within the jail to ensure security and prevent inmate escapes.
- Address and correct inmate behaviors as necessary.
- Process the booking of inmates and ensure their adequate care.
- Supervise inmate conduct to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures, thereby preventing harm to both inmates and staff.
- Document daily activities and incidents through detailed reports.
- Conduct inspections and shakedowns of jail facilities.
- Respond to and de-escalate emergency situations, including fights, suicide attempts, and assaults, applying appropriate force when necessary to protect individuals involved.
- Maintain the cleanliness and operational capacity of the jail.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision
This position does not involve direct supervision of staff but may require occasional administrative and functional oversight for specific activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- One year of experience in law enforcement, jail operations, or a related field is preferred.
- Special Requirement: Candidates should obtain a TCOLE Basic Jail Certification within one year of employment.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
The role involves working in both indoor and outdoor environments, with potential exposure to environmental hazards and chemicals. Candidates must be able to:
- Sit, stand, walk, crouch, lift, push, pull, climb, and carry equipment.
- Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
