KAUFMAN - On Tuesday, the Kaufman County Commissioners Court proclaimed April Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley read the proclamation, which states in part, “Child abuse prevention cannot be tasked to one community, agency, or system. Behind many families that succeeded is a strong community that provides a way for the family to meet their needs and ultimately provide the child with the safe, stable, and nurturing home they need to thrive.”

The proclamation highlights the crucial role of Kaufman County residents, organizations, and agencies such as Kaufman County Child Protective Services, Empower (a collaborative model of community-based care), Kaufman County Children’s Advocacy Center, Kaufman County Child Welfare Board, Lone Star CASA, R.E.A.C.H, A. Fern Norville Shelter, and Bikers Against Child Abuse. Their collective efforts are instrumental in creating a “brighter future for children, families, and communities in Kaufman County.”

Debbie Bonner, Civil Prosecutor and Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney, said that more than 200 children have been helped in 2024.

“In the state of Texas, we believe that each child thrives in a safe, stable, and nurturing home in their community, but unfortunately, child abuse does occur, and it is a significant issue that impacts our community,” states the proclamation.

“Each year, the month of April is dedicated to recognizing the critical work being done across our great state to support families before and after a crisis occurs.”
