TERRELL, Texas — A driver suffered critical injuries in an early morning rollover crash on Hwy 34 at "old" Hwy 34/Frances St. on Wednesday, according to the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department.

At 2:33 a.m., on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, the volunteer firefighters responded to the accident where they found a vehicle that had left the road, slid through the mud, and overturned. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle, with both legs partially ejected out of the side window and the vehicle resting on top of them.

Due to the complicated extrication and the difficulty of moving the patient on the extremely slippery mud, the incident commander requested assistance from the Terrell Fire Department. Personnel from both departments worked together to stabilize the vehicle to prevent any further injury to the patient and to complete the extrication.

Helicopters were unavailable due to weather conditions, so the patient was immediately transported by CareFlite ambulance to a Dallas-area trauma center for further treatment.

All fire units cleared the scene at 3:49 a.m.

"As always, we greatly appreciate our mutual aid partners. More people, more equipment, and more ideas translate to faster scene times, safer operations, and ultimately better care for our patients," the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department said in a statement.
