TERRELL, Texas — Seven people were reportedly injured in a major, head-on collision on U.S. Highway 80 at Spur 557 on Friday night.
The crash, which occured at approxiamtely 8:09 p.m., forced the closure of Spur 557 at the U.S. Highway 80 exit to Terrell for approximately two hours. Traffic was diverted into Terrell at the time of closure.
Due to the number of injured, the crash was declared a mass casualty with at least two people who were critically injured and airlifted to Dallas-area hospitals and five others transported by ground ambulance.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Staff Sergeant Kyle Bradford says the wreck involved three vehicles. Two of those vehicles collided head-on in the eastbound lanes.
One of the vehicles overturned and one person was entrapped in another vehicle. Firefighters extricated that individual who was later airlifted to a Dallas-area hospital.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause of the crash.
