Family displaced after overnight fire likely caused by lightning strike

FORNEY, Texas — A family of four was displaced after their home was destroyed in a fire, likely caused by a lightning stirke, overnight.

FORNEY, Texas — A family of four was displaced after their home was destroyed in a fire, likely caused by a lightning stirke, overnight.

The fire was reported just after 11 p.m. on Mustang Circle off of Farm-to-Market (FM) 2932 and south of Interstate 20.

The Forney Fire Department arrived with smoke and fire showing from the roof near the garage. Mutual aid was provided by the Crandall Fire Department, Terrell Fire Department, Terrell Volunteer Fire Department, and the Mesquite Fire Department.

Firefighters initially began an interior attack of the fire but were called out to fight the fire defensively after it quickly spread throughout the attic of the home.

The family reported hearing a lightning strike and later smelling smoke before evacuating the home and seeing flames coming from the roof, according to Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office Deputy Fire Marshal John Garvin. The fire marshal's office is continuing to investigate the fire.

The American Red Cross of Kaufman County was requested to assist the family which includes two adults and two children.
