KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Five kittens were rescued from a residential house fire earlier today as firefighters rushed to extinguish the blaze.
At 8:56 a.m., on Friday, May 3, 2019, the College Mound Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 6700 block of Farm-to-Market (FM) 429 with witness reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from one side of the house.
"Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire from one corner of a 1-story brick residential structure with fire already spreading to the attic," read a statement from the College Mound Fire Department. "Crews began rapidly attacking the fire through windows to gain the upper hand on the blaze, then pushed inside for complete extinguishment."
The fire was placed under control within 15 minutes of firefighter arrival.
"No one was home at the time of the blaze, but fire crews found 5 young kittens in a cage inside the home," continued the statement. "They were removed from the home, wet and scared, but they are expected to recover."
Mutual aid was requested from the Kaufman, Crandall, and Elmo Fire Departments. The Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
