FORNEY, Texas — A Forney man lost his battle with Stage 4 brain cancer just days after his neighborhood rallied together to host an unforgettable early Christmas for him and his family.

Mike Spore, a Navy veteran, husband, and father of two young boys, passed away yesterday surrounded by family at his Forney-area home in the Founder’s Place neighborhood.

In January 2016, Spore was given a grim prognosis — just 12 months to live.

On November 12, 2016, family, friends, and neighbors organized a Christmas in November for the Spore family which brought memories the family says they will cherish forever.

"There’s more to holidays than the lights on the roof and snowman in the yard,” Leigh Spore, Mike’s wife, told WFAA’s David Schechter. “It’s about family, neighbors that feel like family and strangers that show up to lift your spirits.”

"[It's just an] overwhelming joy, a heart full of love and happiness,” she stated to WFAA. “Just a memory that you can’t duplicate and I can never get back, and I’ll have forever."

In the months after his diagnosis, Mike underwent surgeries, chemotherapy, alternative treatment in the Philippines, and, most recently, radiation treatment delivered through a worn-device 24 hours a day.

Unfortunately, the alternative treatments were not covered under Mike’s health insurance. A GoFundMe account has been established to aid the family with these medical-related expenses.
