FORNEY, Texas — The Forney Police Department graduated its first Citizens Police Academy on Tuesday night.
27 community members participated in the 12-week class and were presented with certificates of graduation on Tuesday night during their graduation ceremony at the Forney Justice Center.
“I hope that you came away with some questions answered and maybe a better appreciation of what police officers do in communities all over this country, but especially here in Forney, Texas,” Forney Police Department Chief Robert Sherwin told the graduating class.
The students attended a 12-week course which began with orientation and a tour of the Forney Police Department and continued with weekly course focused on patrol tactics and equipment, traffic stops, criminal investigations, communications, services and programs, guns and weapons, DWI, SWAT and active shooter scenarios, court, jail, and records.
The class also attended a course at Eastfield Community College which included an interactive “Shoot, Don’t Shoot” scenario.
Forney Police Department detective Michael Clay says the class will likely be a prerequisite to those wanting to participate in the Citizens on Patrol C.O.P. program.
Concluding their graduation, the class took an oath, administered by Forney Municipal Court Judge Margaret Spain:
“I, do solemnly swear, in the presence of my fellow class members, family, guest, and friends, that I now have a better knowledge and understanding of the Forney Police Department. With this knowledge, I can better serve my community as an ambassador and/or liaison to the Forney Police Department, so help me God.”
