FORNEY, Texas — Four elderly people were injured Monday night after a tire blowout forced their van down a highway onramp embankment and into a pasture, lucky to escape major injuries, according to emergency personnel.
Just after 8:30 p.m., the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, Forney Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Crandall Police Department, Mesquite Fire Department, and CareFlite responded to the eastbound Interstate 20 onramp at Farm-to-Market (FM) 741 for the crash.
Police say a van was traveling on the onramp when it experienced a blow out on one of its tires which forced it off the shoulder of the highway, down a large embankment, and into a pasture.
All four elderly occupants of the van sustained various injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
Emergency personnel say the occupants escaped major injury due to the driver’s ability to prevent the van from overturning while traveling down the embankment.
At least two of the passengers reportedly did not have their seat belts on at the time of the crash.
