CRANDALL, Texas — A gas line break in Crandall prompted evacuations of nearby soccer fields, an elementary school campus, and several houses on Tuesday evening.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., the Crandall Fire Department and Crandall Police Department responded to the area of Martin Elementary School off the south service road of U.S. Highway 175 and Trinity Road in response to a gas leak.

Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie tells inForney.com a construction crew hit a three-inch, high-pressure gas line while working in the area.

Nearby soccer fields, Martin Elementary, and three houses were evacuated, according to Howie. No students were believed to have been in the school at the time but Howie says there were several teachers and staff members who were asked to evacuate.

As of 9:30 p.m., Atmos crews were still attempting to located and clamp the line in order to perform repairs.

Howie says the line should be clamped soon and repairs will be made overnight.

The three homes which were evacuated have been cleared to re-enter, he said.
