TERRELL, Texas — A fire at the Gateway Inn in Terrell, Texas, displaced approximately 24 people overnight, according to officials.

TERRELL, Texas — A fire at the Gateway Inn in Terrell, Texas, displaced approximately 24 people overnight, according to officials.

The fire at the inn, which is located in the 300 block of Interstate 20, was first reported at approximately 10 p.m.

Firefighters from the Terrell Fire Department, Terrell Volunteer Fire Department, Forney Fire Department, and the Forney Volunteer Fire Department resounded to the scene.

The fire originated in a utility room at the north end of one of the inn’s buildings, according to firefighters. The room of origin was damaged by fire and smoke and eight other units sustained heavy smoke damage.

36 units in the effected building were evacuated. Fire officials say 18 of those units were occupied.

Approximately 24 people were displaced due to the fire, according to Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie. 14 of those people were permanent live-in residents.

The Terrell Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
