GUN BARREL CITY, Texas — A Gun Barrel City teen was killed in a two-vehicle rollover crash on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Van Zandt County Road 2801, 10 miles north of Mabank, Texas, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Jean Dark.
According to Dark, preliminary crash investigation reveals 16-year-old James Jones, of Gun Barrel City, was driving a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder when he apparently disregarded a stop sign at Van Zandt County Road 2802 and into the path of a 2001 Mercury Villager driven by a 52-year-old Mabank man.
The vehicles collided in the intersection, sending the Pathfinder into a roll and ejecting all three occupants.
Jones was pronounced deceased on scene and two other teenagers were injured — 16-year-old Caitlin McElhany of Kemp, Texas, and 14-year-old Destinie Whitman. Both were transported to Dallas-area hospitals and are reportedly in stable condition.
The 52-year-old driver of the Mercury Villager and a 53-year-old passenger, both of Mabank, Texas, were transported to East Texas Medical Center and were listed in stable condition as of last check Thursday morning.
A celebration of life will be held in Jones’ memory at the First Baptist Church, 522 West Main in Gun Barrel City at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017.
A GoFundMe account has also been established to assist Jones’ mother, who is an employee at the Gun Barrel City Economic Development Corporation, for lost wages and funeral-related expenses.
