KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public service announcement warning of a possible online scam involving a fictitious online news story.
Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Fred Klingelberger says the department became aware of a fictitious news story titled “father shot and kill his wife and kids in Kaufman County” being circulated on the “Kaufman County Breaking News” Facebook Page.
Klingelberger says they are not investigating any such crimes in the county and says people should not click on the link because it may contain malware or another virus.
The story links back to medianewsworld.com which has garnered similar media attention across North Texas with local police departments warning of possible malicious intent.
The Kaufman County Breaking News Facebook Page already has 53 likes and the post of the fictitious story already has 60 shares with several people stating the link caused a virus to download on their computer.
