KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Yesterday, the Kaufman County Commissioner's Court unanimously voted to place two county bond propositions on the November ballot — Proposition A and Proposition B totaling approximately $154.1 million.
KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Yesterday, the Kaufman County Commissioner's Court unanimously voted to place two county bond propositions on the November ballot — Proposition A and Proposition B totaling approximately $154.1 million.
Proposition A calls for $104.1 million in road and transportation improvements to 71 roads throughout the county.
Proposition B calls for $50 million to build a new justice center and improvements to sub courthouses or new facilities in Forney, Kemp, and Terrell.
Included in Proposition B is a proposed law enforcement facility, potentially to include a possible sub-courthouse and Kaufman County Sheriff's Office sub-station, on 15 acres adjacent North Forney High School. On July 29, 2019, the Forney ISD Board of Trustees approved a lease agreement with the county in furtherance of the proposed bond. The facility may play host to educational opportunities with Forney ISD's student law enforcement programs.
Prop B also calls for renovations to the Kaufman courthouse as well as a regional animal shelter which may be in partnership with other area agencies.
The list of proposed transportation and road improvements was compiled by the Kaufman County Transportation Coalition committee, which was formed earlier this year to provide local input from community leaders. Among the list of 71 road projects are 36 county roads to improve "safety and traffic congestion relief." The remaining roads on the list are maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation.
In 2013, Kaufman County voters approved a $56 million transportation bond. Kaufman County Judge Hal Richards says almost all of the 2013 bond transportation projects have either finished or funded — at a rate of approximately $7 for every dollar committed by the county.
“Better, safer roads and easier access to county services is a core principal in improving the quality of life for Kaufman County residents,” stated County Judge Hal Richards yesterday. “Today’s action gives the voter a voice about county services to decide if they want better roads and safer and more efficient facilities in Kaufman County.”
