KAUFMAN, Texas — The Kaufman Police Department is investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash on State Highway 34 Bypass and FM 1836 / Rand Road that occurred earlier this morning, October 4, 2023.
The crash occurred just before 7 a.m. and involved a passenger van, a pick-up truck, and another pick-up truck towing a trailer loaded with an excavator.
Upon arrival, officers found the adult driver of the van unresponsive. A juvenile passenger from the same vehicle, who was alert but seriously injured, was airlifted to a Dallas area hospital for treatment.
The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Precinct #1, Judge Mary Bardin.
The identity of the deceased, described as a cherished community member, is being withheld until family members are notified and the Dallas County Medical Examiner confirms the identification.
"The deceased driver is a wonderful member of our community and will be missed by many of their family members and friends," stated the Kaufman Police Department.
The drivers of the pick-up trucks reported no injuries and have been cooperative with the ongoing investigation. At this time, no criminal charges are expected to be filed against any of the drivers who remained at the scene.
The Kaufman Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety in reconstructing the accident, is continuing to interview witnesses and is seeking anyone else who may have witnessed the crash.
