KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 175 on Wednesday afternoon.
The crash occurred on westbound U.S. Highway 175 just north of the Kemp city limits at Ashley Road. There, a pickup truck became wedged under the trailer of an 18-wheeler.
The driver of the pickup truck, identified by police as 54-year-old Russell Gattis of Mabank, Texas, was pronounced deceased on scene.
The pickup truck was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 175 when the 18-wheeler, which was traveling eastbound, turned in front of the pickup truck onto Ashley Road, DPS spokesperson Staff Sergeant Kyle Bradford told inForney.com.
The driver is expected to be cited for failing to yield to the right of way, Bradford said.
A law enforcement source also tells inForney.com the driver of the 18-wheeler was driving unlicensed and did not have a commercial drivers license to operate the 18-wheeler.
Its unknown, at this time, if the driver of the 18-wheeler will face any additional charges in connection with the crash.
