In rare cases where a parent poses a danger to the child, a judge might designate one parent as the Sole Managing Conservator. Possession schedules can vary from case to case, but it's important to understand the different types of possession from 50/50 to standard and expanded standard. Judges want the child to have a relationship with both parents, but also have a schedule that allows the child to thrive in academics and activities etc.

Robert Guest: The process can vary, but it generally begins with the filing of a Petition and serving the other party. The first hearing usually involves establishing temporary orders, which set the rules for the case as it unfolds. These temporary orders can include who the child lives with and who pays child support during the proceedings.

Next, we enter a phase called discovery, where both parties exchange information. Most cases then move to mediation, where a neutral third party helps parents negotiate a settlement. Mediation is often a very effective way to resolve disputes without the need for a trial. If an agreement is reached, it becomes a legally binding court order.
