FORNEY, Texas — The process to add the motto ‘In God We Trust’ to City of Forney vehicles has begun in a ceremony held Tuesday morning.

FORNEY, Texas — The process to add the motto ‘In God We Trust’ to City of Forney vehicles has begun in a ceremony held Tuesday morning.

The City of Forney says the motto will first be added to police department and fire department vehicles and later added to all City of Forney vehicles.

The Forney City Council unanimously approved the addition of the motto last month during an April 5 council meeting.

Council member Scott Regan, who spearheaded the initiative, said the design, materials, and installation of the project was donated by local business Big Jay’s Sign and Shirt Works and no tax monies would be used.

Regan says he received diverse support for the measure from fellow elected officials in Kaufman County, law enforcement personnel and other first responsiders, church leaders, citizens, and business owners.

The item gained additional support on social media but some questioned the motto’s constitutionality on city-owned vehicles and possible legal fees associated with defending the measure.

“This is the realization and the culmination of some hard work,” Regan stated Tuesday morning. “A lot of footwork was involved to rally the community — which did not hesitate to do so.”

“The support from the community as a whole, county officials, other elected officials, law enforcement, coming together for a common cause,” Regan continued. “It culminated today and, to see it in action, is very emotional.”

“This is a declaration of our foundation, its who we are and who we are to be,” stated Regan. “It was adopted in 1956 as our national motto so why not display that accordingly. It’s a piece of patriotism and it’s a component of patriotism to me that makes total since to display.”
