KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — The statewide ban on texting while driving began today, September 1, 2017.
The law prohibits the driver of a motor vehicle from using a wireless electronic device to read, write, or send an electronic message while operating a motor vehicle.
Motorists can still use their phones for GPS navigation, music apps, dialing phone numbers, or other emergency situations, unless prohibited by local regulations.
First time violators may be fined up to $99 and up to $200 for repeat offenders. Those involved in an accident caused by a violation of the law which results in serious bodily injury or death of another person can be charged with a class A misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $4,000 and up to a year in jail.
Officials encourage the use of hands-free technology, such as Bluetooth devices, which do not distract from the road.
