FORNEY, Texas — UPDATE — Residents have been given the all-clear to return home after a suspicious package prompted evacuations and a response from the Garland Police Department Bomb Unit on Thursday night.
The package, initially deemed suspicious, was found to be harmless.
The homeowner was awaiting a package not expected until June 9 and, when the package was observed to not have any immediately visible markings, notified police.
Garland Police Department Bomb Unit efforts were briefly hindered by a low-flying drone in the area.
As a precaution, emergency personnel evacuated nearby residences while the package was investigated.
According to Constable Jason Johnson, the package was determined to be the package scheduled for later delivery but had instead arrived early.
ORIGINAL — Several homes are being evacuated in the Windmill Farms neighborhood just east of Forney after a suspicious package was discovered on Thursday evening.
Around 8 p.m.,a homeowner reported a suspicious package on their front porch in the 2000 block of Brook Meadow Drive.
Two deputies with the Precinct 2 Constable's Office responded and discovered a cardboard box on the complainant's front porch, Precinct 2 Constable Jason Johnson told inForney.com.
"The package has clear tape around it, was upside down, and no other identifiers," he said.
The homeowner told police only one item had been ordered on Amazon and was not expected to be delivered until June 9.
For safety matters, according to Johnson, the Forney Fire Department and the Garland Police Department Bomb Unit were requested to the scene.
Johnson also says several area residences are being evacuated within the area.
This is a developing story.
