TERRELL—The Terrell Council approved a resolution supporting increased funding for TXDOT and the Regional Transportation Council to clear a $4 Billion backlog of work in the next five years.
Recent reports have stated that the Kaufman County area and surrounding region are expected to grow in population by 4 million over the next 25 years.
The resolution presented by the Terrell Council states in part, “The region set to expand by roughly 4 million new residents in just 25 years with or without transportation investments in Kaufman County much of that growth will arrive in Kaufman County causing serious increases in congestion and traffic safety concerns.”
The resolution states that there are gaps in the regional transportation work for projects, including a gap in funding for IH 20 in Kaufman County and US 80 expansion, which is planned for six lanes to FM 460, but no plans for IH 20 on US 80 and Spur 557 in Terrell and Forney.
“The latest ITS Kaufman County Report shows $3.8 billion in projects with less than $700 million identified in funding while excluding critical projects such as US 175 and IH 20 main lane improvements,” states the resolution. “This documents at least $4 billion in backlogged TXDOT transportation investment needs.”
The City of Terrell encourages other Kaufman County communities to pass similar resolutions to support increased funding and project completion.
