Thousands of gallons of crude oil spills from well in Kemp area, officials investigating cause

KEMP, Texas — Officials are investigating the cause of an oil well spill in the Kemp area of Kaufman County on Wednesday.

KEMP, Texas — Officials are investigating the cause of an oil well spill in the Kemp area of Kaufman County on Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Railroad Commission, which oversees the oil and gas industry, and the Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management responded to the oil well spill on private property off Farm-to-Market (FM) 1391 in the Kemp area of Kaufman County.

Although an exact amount has not been determined, emergency officials estimate the spill in the thousands of gallons of crude oil.

The pumps at the well have been turned off and there is no risk of additional contamination at this time, Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie told inForney.com.

The spill was contained to a low lying area as well as a private road on the property, stated Howie.

The cause of the spill had not yet been determined at the time of press.

Howie says a crew will be dispatched to clean up the spill in accordance with state guidelines.
