TERRELL, Texas — The Terrell Police Department is investigating a triple fatal crash on Interstate 20 which forced the closure of the highway Monday morning.
The crash was reported at approxiamtely 9:38 a.m. on Monday, October 24, 2016, on eastbound Interstate 20 just before the Wilson Road exit.
Terrell Police Department Captain A.D. Sansom says 55-year-old Lewis Rogers of Oakridge, Louisiana, was driving a red Ford pickup truck while pullin a trailer westbound on Interstate 20 when a tire reportedly blew out on the truck, forcing it across the center median, and head-on with another pickup truck.
"A tire reportedly blew out on the truck and the driver lost control and the vehicle left the roadway, rolled over, and was struck as it came to rest in the oncoming eastbound lane of traffic," stated Sansom in a Monday afternoon update.
Both vehicles overturned in the crash, according to Sansom.
Rogers and 54-year-old Jeffery Thomas of Monroe, Lousiana, who was a passenger in Rogers' truck, both died in the crash, according to Sansom. The driver of the other pickup truck, a white Chevy, later identified as 68-year-old Jerry Crawford of Princeton, Texas, was also pronounced deceased.
Eastbound Interstate 20 was closed as a result of the crash and reopened at approximately 2:29 p.m. Accident investigators were expected to clear the scene before 4 p.m.
The Terrell Fire Department, Terrell Police Department, advanced crash investigators with the Terrell Police Department, CareFlite, Terrell ISD Police Department, and the Kaufman County Constable’s Office reponded to the crash.
