KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A Thursday morning residential fire tragically claimed the life of a nine-month-old infant in Kaufman County.

Members of the Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Association Task Force have been deployed to aid in investigating the origin and cause of the fire as well as the recovery of the victim's body, Kaufman County Fire Marshal Randy Richards told inForney.com.

Just before 6 a.m., Richards says a passerby called in a residential structure fire in the 6500 block of Farm-to-Market (FM) 2578, just south of FM 987, and notified the homeowners.

The mother and her three-year-old were able to escape the fire. The child was later transported to an area hospital as a precautionary due to smoke inhalation and was alert and responsive at the time of transport.

The Kaufman Fire Department responded with mutual aid from the Terrell Volunteer Fire Department and a rehab truck from the College Mound Fire Department. The American Red Cross also responded to assist the family.

Investigators remained on scene Thursday evening. Richards says the investigation will be lengthy and deliberate. At this time, he says, nothing appears to be suspicious.

The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Kaufman County Fire Marshal's Office in the investigation.
